Why we love it

A phone speaker is a suggestion. The Charge 5 is a brick that agreed to be the stereo. You set it on a picnic table, a pool deck, or the worst shelf in the kitchen, and the playlist finally has a body.

We love the black one because it looks like equipment, not a toy that escaped a commercial. JBL’s notes: a woofer and a separate tweeter, dual bass radiators, Bluetooth 5.1, and up to 20 hours if you are not trying to host a stadium. IP67 means dust and a real dunk, not a light mist and a prayer. There is a USB-C port that will also charge a phone, which is how a speaker earns a spot in the bag next to the actual battery. PartyBoost links it to another JBL if the party gets ideas.

It will not replace the over-ears on a train, and it is not the Charge 6. It is the Charge 5, the one with the enormous pile of reviews and a shape you can find in the dark.

The longer story

This is the JBL Charge 5 portable Bluetooth speaker in Black. In the usual box: the speaker, a USB-C cable, and the paperwork. JBL’s notes include a long-excursion woofer plus a tweeter (about 40 watts of rated output), up to 20 hours of playtime, an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, Bluetooth 5.1, PartyBoost, and a built-in power bank. The speaker is about 8.7 by 3.8 by 3.7 inches and a little over 2 pounds. The black model number is JBLCHARGE5BLKAM.

Good for

  • A backyard, a beach towel, a kitchen that has banished the phone speaker
  • Trips where you want music and a way to top up a phone
  • The black one, if you do not want a speaker that matches a swimsuit

  • You wanted the smaller Flip, the bigger Xtreme, or the Charge 6. This page is the Charge 5 in Black
  • You need Wi-Fi multi-room or a soundbar. This is Bluetooth, and it likes being outside
