Why we love it

A phone will let you read. It will also let you check the thing you were trying not to check. The Paperwhite is a small, slightly smug solution: a screen with a book on it, and nowhere to put the group chat.

We love the boring specs that make a trip better. A 7-inch glare-free display, a light that shifts from white toward amber, and a battery Amazon rates in weeks rather than a single commute. It is waterproof enough for a bath or a bag that met a puddle. Sixteen gigabytes holds more books than a personality needs. The usual list price on this 16 GB black model is $159.99, which is mid-ticket on purpose: less than a laptop, more than a gadget you will lose in a couch.

It will not replace the laptop, and it should not. It replaces the 11 p.m. scroll with a chapter. That is a fair trade.
