Why we love it
Wireless headphones are a negotiation with a battery. The ATH-M50x skips the meeting. A cable, a pair of 45-millimeter drivers, and a sound people still use when the recording has to be honest.
We love the studio facts that survived the commute. Closed-back cups, a fold that collapses into a bag, earcups that swivel, and three detachable cables in the box so the long one can stay at the desk. Audio-Technica’s spec sheet: 15 to 28,000 Hz, 38 ohms, about 285 grams without the cable, plus a pouch and a quarter-inch adapter. The listing’s warranty line is two years on parts and labor. When we looked, the black pair was $158 and in stock, sold by Technica House and shipped by Amazon. Audio-Technica’s own shop lists the M50x from $159.
It will not cancel an airplane. It will tell you what the song actually sounds like. The noise-canceling pair can keep the flight. These keep the mix.
The longer story
This is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x professional studio monitor headphone in black, the wired one. Audio-Technica’s notes: closed-back dynamic headphones, 45 mm drivers with rare-earth magnets, a frequency response of 15 to 28,000 Hz, 38 ohms impedance, 99 dB sensitivity, and a weight of about 285 grams without the cable. The earcups swivel. The headband collapses. In the box: a carrying pouch, a screw-on 1/4-inch adapter, and three detachable cables (a coiled cable, a 3-meter straight cable, and a 1.2-meter straight cable). The Amazon listing lists a 2-year warranty on parts and labor. UPC 700621457916.
