Why we love it
Over-ears are a hat. A train is not a hat occasion. The QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd generation) are the pair you buy when the room will not lower its voice and a full headphone is too much luggage for the errand.
We love the black ones because the noise canceling is the point, and Bose’s point is still the point. The listing’s notes: ActiveSense for sudden noise, CustomTune that fits the canceling to your ear, Immersive Audio if you want the song to sit outside your head, and SpeechClarity for calls. Up to 6 hours in Quiet or Aware mode, up to 4 if Immersive Audio is on, and the case holds about three more charges. The case charges wirelessly or over USB-C. IPX4 means sweat and a light rain, not a pool. Nine combinations of tips and stability bands come in the box, which is how an earbud survives a real ear.
When we looked, Amazon had the black pair at $240.99 against a $299 list, sold by Amazon.com. That is mid-ticket on purpose: less than a laptop, more than a gadget that disappears into a couch and stays there. The AirPods can keep the Apple orbit. These are the ones for the person whose phone is not the personality.
The longer story
This is the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd generation) in black, model 896637-0010, UPC 017817861120. In the usual box: the two earbuds, a wireless charging case, a USB-C cable, three pairs of eartips (S, M, L), three pairs of stability bands, and the paperwork. Bose’s notes include ActiveSense noise canceling, CustomTune, Bose Immersive Audio, SpeechClarity for calls, Bluetooth multipoint, and an IPX4 rating. Battery life on the listing is up to 6 hours in Quiet or Aware mode and up to 4 hours with Immersive Audio on. The case holds up to three additional charges and charges wirelessly or by USB-C. The Bose app handles updates.
Good for
- Commutes, open offices, and flights where over-ears feel like a costume
- Calls where you would like your voice to survive the background
- A pocket. The case is the product you will actually carry
Skip it if
- You wanted the first-generation QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, the Ultra Open clips, or the over-ear QuietComfort headphones. This page is the black 2nd-gen Ultra earbuds
- You need all-day battery in the buds alone. Six hours is the Quiet-mode claim, and Immersive Audio spends it faster
- You wanted a gym dunk. IPX4 is splash resistance, not a swim
When we looked, black was $240.99 against a $299 list, in stock, sold by Amazon.com. The price moves. The deal link is the Amazon page (/dp/B0F7M3HPBD) with our Amazon Associates tag threepaths-20. Confirm the color swatch says Black and the title says 2nd Gen.
