Why we love it
Some gifts need a size. This one needs a table and a person who will trade you a sheep and then feel clever about it. You settle an island of hexes. You collect brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep. You build roads, settlements, and cities, and you try to reach ten points before someone parks the robber on your best number.
We love the 6th Edition because it is the current base game, not a memory of the 1995 box and not an expansion that requires a box you do not own. Three to four players. Ages 10 and up. About an hour, longer if the table likes to negotiate. The board is different every time, which is how a game survives being the only game the household owns. When we looked, Amazon had it at $39.99 against a $49.99 list, sold by Amazon.com. That is a gift under $50 that does not care about a shoe size or a skin type.
It will not fit in a coat the way a card game does. It will take the evening, which is what you wanted when you said you would just play one. Ticket to Ride can keep the trains. This one wants the sheep.
