Why we love it

A pot of rice should not be a project with a timer and a prayer. The Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 is the cooker people mean when they stop pretending a saucepan is a personality. Fuzzy logic is a silly phrase for a serious habit: the machine watches the pot and changes the heat instead of making you stand there.

We love the 5.5-cup white one because it is the household size. White rice, brown rice, porridge, the sushi setting you will use once and feel competent about. It keeps the rice warm after, which is the feature that matters on a Tuesday when dinner is arriving in pieces. Zojirushi’s own shop lists the NS-ZCC family from about $280. That is a real appliance. The Amazon price moves.

It will not sear a steak. It will make the rice the part of dinner you stop thinking about. The Instant Pot can keep the one-pot nights. This one keeps the pot from being a gamble.

The longer story

This is the Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker & Warmer, model NS-ZCC10, the 5.5-cup premium white one (about 1.0 liter). Capacity is measured in the rice cup that comes in the box, uncooked. Zojirushi’s notes: fuzzy-logic temperature control, a spherical nonstick pan, keep-warm and extended keep-warm, a reheating cycle, a delay timer with two settings, and a retractable cord. Menus include white (regular, sushi, softer, harder), mixed, porridge, sweet, semi-brown, brown, rinse-free, and quick. It is built for 120 volts. It is the 5.5-cup, not the 10-cup NS-ZCC18, and not an induction pressure cooker.

Good for

  • Rice that has to be right more than once a week
  • A household cooking for more than one person. 5.5 cups uncooked is a real pot, not a lunch thermos
  • Anyone whose saucepan method is “watch it and hope”

Skip it if
