Why we love it

A phone will count your steps. It will also live in a bag, where the steps go to become a rumor. The SE 3 is the watch you buy when you want the report on your wrist and you do not need the most expensive aluminum Apple makes.

We love the Midnight 40 mm with the small/medium sport band because it looks like a watch and not a billboard. GPS, not cellular. An always-on display, so the time is there without a little wrist theater. Apple’s battery claim is up to 18 hours, and the charge is quicker than the SE 2: up to 8 hours of battery from about 15 minutes, on their notes. Heart rate, an irregular rhythm alert, a sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, and the crash and fall detection that is the feature you hope stays bored. When we looked, Amazon had this Midnight S/M at $249, with only a few left.

It needs an iPhone. It will not replace the phone, and it should not. It replaces the part of the day where you wonder if you moved. The earbuds can keep the commute. This one keeps the receipts.

This is the Apple Watch SE 3 (2025) in GPS, 40 mm Midnight aluminum case, with the Midnight sport band, size S/M. The model number on this configuration is MEH94LW/A. It is not the cellular version, not the 44 mm case, and not the M/L band. Apple’s notes on the SE 3 include an always-on Retina display, all-day battery life listed up to 18 hours, faster charging than the SE 2, heart-rate and irregular-rhythm alerts, sleep score and sleep apnea notifications, temperature sensing for the Vitals app, workout tracking, crash and fall detection, and water resistance.   • Someone who wants the current SE, not a Series or an Ultra, and already lives on an iPhone
  • Sleep, walks, and the notification that does not require fishing the phone out of a coat
  • The Midnight 40 mm with the shorter band, if that is the wrist
