Why we love it
Some games announce the fight. Azul pretends to be a craft project. You draft colored tiles off shared plates, you build a little wall, and then you notice you took the tile your friend needed. The wall is pretty. The draft is not polite.
We love it because the whole idea fits a gift under $50 and does not ask for a sleeve length. Two to four players. Ages 8 and up. About 30 to 45 minutes. It won the 2018 Spiel des Jahres, which is the serious prize for a game that still looks like candy. The box on this page is the original English edition, model NMG-600010EN: 100 resin tiles, four boards, nine factory displays, and a linen bag. Not Azul Kids. Not the duel. Not a pavilion.
When we looked, Amazon.com had it in stock, with a deal at $23.99 and a one-time price of $31.99 against a $39.99 list. Either number stays under $50. Catan can keep the sheep. This one keeps the evening shorter and the table better looking.
The longer story
This is Azul, the original English tile-placement game from Plan B Games, model NMG-600010EN (the model name on the listing is NM6010), UPC 826956600107. Two to four players. Ages 8 and up. About 30 to 45 minutes. In the box, per the listing: 100 resin tiles, 4 player boards, 9 factory displays, 4 scoring markers, a starting-player marker, and a linen bag.
Good for
- Two people who want a game with rules you can teach before the pizza arrives
- A gift that does not care about a size, a shade, or a console
- Anyone whose shelf is one pretty game away from being a personality
Skip it if
- You wanted Azul Kids, Azul Duel, Stained Glass of Sintra, or Summer Pavilion. Those are different boxes. This link is the original
- You needed a loud party game. This one is quiet and a little mean
- The page is a language you do not read. This listing is the English edition
When we looked, Amazon.com had it in stock: a deal at $23.99, and $31.99 against a $39.99 list. The deal link is the Amazon page (/dp/B077MZ2MPW) with our Amazon Associates tag threepaths-20. Confirm the box is the original Azul, ages 8+, not a spinoff.
